Probably too busy dashing too and fro and failing to make time to enjoy some of the better things in life, which a trip to this delightful nursery certainly is.
Situated on the East Hanningfield Road in Rettendon, the nursery was established in 1966 by Ben Eng, his son Andrew joined him soon after and together with a hard working team they now look after a 20 acre nursery of which two and a half acres are under glass. Although the nursery is a major supplier to shops, garden centres and Covent Garden Market, ordinary folk are welcome to come and browse and buy plants seven days a week.
For anybody with any horticultural leanings at all, even if it is caring for a single hanging basket, a stroll around the nursery grounds is utter magic. You can wander at will amongst the thousands upon thousands of plants at different stages of development, many blooming in fantastic colour and select whatever takes your fancy. There will not be anybody breathing down your neck but if you want advice or guidance just find Ben or Andrew and they will be happy to help.
They put so much hard work and tender care into nurturing each seedling and cutting that they only give advice you can rely on, to ensure that the plants will continue to thrive. If they don't think something is quite right for you they will gently tell you so and recommend an alternative.
In addition to the many bedding plants, conifers and heathers available, the nursery also specialises in hanging baskets. A hanging pot filled with Busy Lizzies is from £2, whilst a Fuschia hanging pot is from £3.50. Luxurious, moss lined wire hanging baskets, planted and containing a slow release fertiliser to ensure healthy plants throughout the season, start from just £12 each. Baskets can be purchased already made up or planted to your requirements. You can even bring your own baskets to the nursery and they will be planted to your specification and nurtured until they are ready to adorn your garden or doorstep.
The nursery also mix their own peat based and loam based composts. This is used within the nursery but can also be purchased at £2.75 for a large sack full and you know it is good stuff, just look at all the wonderful specimens growing like fury around you. A super range of terracotta pots are always on sale, some are always available planted up and grown in for instant colour.
